The Basics:


The system consists of a tiny but powerful control computer, and several LED light chips which can be connected together in a daisy chain configuration. Each LED can generate any color.

Everything about the lighting system is customisable - which means that the exact same components are used, regardless of the type of model you are building, or the lighting effects you want to achieve.

All you need to decide is how many LEDs you require for your model. They interlock together, or you can use interconnecting cables - no soldering, and no computer code writing is required.

Endless Options


You can adjust the colors, brightness and light effects even after you install the LEDs in your model.

You can control the lighting and sound effects using physical buttons, an iOS or Android device, perhaps utilising a custom user interface, or using your voice with Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

Whether you are building a sci-fi model starship, World War II aircraft, or model train scenery, you can almost certainly use Inner-Light to enhance your project.




Custom Colors


Each individual light chip is capable of producing any one of over 16.5 million color combinations made up of a red, green, blue and dedicated white micro LED contained within the unit.

You do not have to decide on the color or brightness of the lights during your build, just their physical location in the model.

The colors, brightness, and lighting effects can then all be configured afterwards.

You can also use LED lens caps to send light anywhere in your model using fibre optic strands:

Custom Effects


The control computer is capable of affecting any of the light chips, individually or grouped, to produce various effects and transitions.

For example, you may want certains lights flashing alternately between two different colors, with random or specific timing, a set number of times.

Or you may want to fade between different colors over a period of time, or emulate fire, lightning or welding etc.

The control computer also has an audio output for playing multiple sound effects to enhance your model.

There are several options to affect the current lighting scenes, including physical switches wired up to the control computer, or by connecting the control computer to a standard WiFi network.

By using the wireless network, it then becomes possible to control the lighting via one of several customisable control apps available on iOS or Android, or via services such as IFTTT.com.

Maybe you want to control the lighting effects using your voice, through Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

Or perhaps you want to adjust the lighting based on external conditions - such as the location of your phone, or the weather, or the stock market...the possibilities are endless.

WARNING - all components sold are to be used for the purposes of home use diy scale model building by adults only. There are small parts which may present a choking hazard - it is essential that you keep all components out of reach of children. The LED lights are bright, and it is possible to program the lights to flash rapidly, so care should be taken with regards to epilepsy etc. Components use 5V DC power. Always disconnect the electricity supply before connecting / disconnecting any components.

Frequently Asked Questions



Why did you create this lighting system?

Scale models are all about precision. After building many models as a hobby, I became frustrated with the existing lighting kits available. They all suffered from the same shortcomings, namely:

They were model specific.
The color and brightness of the lights could not be altered, certainly not after they were installed.
The lighting effects, if any, were limited and could not be altered
They required too many wires! This system just needs 3 in total, no matter how many lights you have.
They could not be controlled across a network.

I wanted a neat, flexible, upgradable modular solution which would allow complete control over every aspect of the lighting, no matter what model you are building.

How many light chips can be connected together?

At least 1000, provided that they are powered correctly (please refer to the documentation). Using the supplied cables & power supply (5VDC 2 Amp), I recommend no more than 100, which is more than enough for most models - though it depends whether all the LEDs will be on at the same time, as the LEDs draw very little power when not illuminated. You can also reduce the maximum brightness of the entire system, which allows you to have more lights illuminated at the same time.

How bright are the lights?

Extremely bright, if you want them to be. Usually you will want to dim them down (via the configuration software) to provide the desired lighting effect.

How do I control the lights?

There are several options. The lights will all go to a pre-determined state when the controller is powered up. You can then either use physical buttons wired up to the controller, or you can connect the controller to a WiFi network and control the lights with a web browser. By default the controller will also broadcast its own WiFi network which you can connect to for configuration and control. You can also control it via any 3rd party app or system capable of sending standard https commands.

How do I control the lights with an app?

There are several control apps available for iOS and Android which allow you to create a customised user interface and send IP commands to control the lights. Contact me for details and an example configuration file.

How do I control the lights with Amazon Alexa or Google Home?

via IFTTT.com using the Webhooks service - refer to the documentation for instructions.

How many physical control buttons can be connected to the control computer?

Up to 8 can be used to change the lighting, plus one for shutting the system down, and another for powering it up, if required. (The computer will power up automatically when power is applied)

What are the specifications of the control computer?

It is an RPi 3 Model A+ unit - 1.4GHz 64-bit quad-core processor, 512MB RAM, dual-band wireless LAN.

Can I use one control computer to control several different models?

Yes - you can save and load different configurations whenever you wish to swap between models

Can I use one control computer to control several models at the same time?

Yes - provided the lights are all connected together in a single chain
